My 3rd and last observation is the Nursing FIG lounge, located on the 3rd floor of Alumni Hall. This room is mainly for nursing students but others can come in as well. Inside the room there is a set of four chairs with a table in the middle, there is a set of couches in front of a big television, and there are four chairs around two Red Cross tables. The room is made to look like a hospital waiting room, so the couches and chairs look like the ones that would be in a waiting room and the walls are a dark navy blue. There are many windows on either side of the lounge one facing toward the outside and the other facing toward the hallway. The windows are roof to floor so it’ s easy for others to see into the lounge from either side.
On the chairs around the table there are two boys and two girls. The students were all on their laptops and had headphones in. There were notebooks, textbooks, and papers on the table and on the arm handles of the chairs. The students weren’t really talking to each other besides an occasional question or statement. They were really focused on the work that had to be accomplished. On the other hand there was a group of four girls on the couches. These girls were doing homework with papers scattered everywhere on the couches. But they were also talking to each other, laughing, and watching a reality TV show on the screen in front of them. They didn’t really seem to be focused on what they were doing and they were on the same page of homework for a while. Also in the room at the time there was a group of kids by the Red Cross tables have a meeting about decorating the halls for Halloween. These kids were part of RHA and they are in charge of decorating Alumni Hall for a Halloween contest. The group was not very loud and they throwing out ideas for decorating.
The FIG lounges consist of students studying and socializing. But I wonder if these lounges were originally supposed to be a strict group study room for each first year interest group or a social area for them and also was the students want them to be. Some students could want these rooms to be a socializing room where they can just hang out with each other. Others might want the lounges to be a group study room where they can have a group study session and concentrate on that.Also if all of the FIG lounges are suppose to be alike in the studying or socializing aspect. Such as is the ESPN FIG suppose to have the same values as the Nursing FIG or the Honors FIG. There was more girls studying in the nursing FIG than guys that were in there. Only two guys were in there studying and the rest of the guys in there were there for a meeting and socialization. Meanwhile, in the ESPN FIG would there be more guys than girls just playing ping pong or watching a sports game on the TV. But like the actual dorm rooms, there was again a mixture of socialization and studying in the lounge.
